Anatomy of Aerial Artists: The "WHY" of Circus Training

Session 2: Hanging with Circus Shoulders

As circus performers, we spend a lot of time with our arms overhead. Learn how they can move so freely while still remaining a stable joint to hang or stand on, or come find out what might be holding them back. Understanding the shoulder girdle will help you have stable, flexible, and pain-free shoulders throughout your training and performing goals.

Dr. Emily Scherb is physical therapist specializing in the care, treatment, and education of circus artists. She is the author of Applied Anatomy of Aerial Arts. Emily lectures on anatomy, the bio-mechanics of circus, and injury prevention for circus artists, instructors, medical professionals and students across the country. Emily is a retired aerialist and veteran instructor. She continues to train and teach whenever she has a chance.
